    21 Nov 2009 | 4:00 am
Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. J.J. Hickson, Cleveland Cavaliers 33 MIN, 15 PTS, 7-9 FG, 1-3 FT, 7 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 2 TO Hickson bounced back from a dud to post another solid game for the Cavs. Mario Chalmers, Miami Heat 38 MIN, 30 points, 9-15 FG, 7-9 FT, 5 3PM, 1 REB, 3 AST, 3 STL, 2 TO Chalmers more than tripled his scoring average. He’s worth owning, but he mainly provides steals and assists. Jarrett Jack, Toronto Raptors 31 MIN, 17 PTS, 5-9 FG, 4-4 FT, 3 3PM, 3 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL Jack had his first double-digit scoring…

Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. Jared Dudley, Phoenix Suns 28 MIN, 17 PTS, 5-G FG, 2-2 FT, 5 3pM, 5 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL, 1 TO Dudley has been pulling down a fair amount of rebounds  for a wing player, and draining three-pointers. He’s inconsistent, but has been pretty solid over his last nine games. Darren Collison, New Orleans Hornets 32 MIN, 15 PTS, 4-15 FG, 6-6 FT, 1 3PM, 5 REB, 5 AST, 1 STL, 1 TO He shot terribly, but finished with a good rebound total for a Point Guard, and a decent assist total. Marcus Thornton, New Orleans…

Brady Quinn Medicine Woman - I think Jane Seymour could have played a better game. Not Cutlering It - Five INTS. Even for a Bears QB, that’s just not cutting it. Rottenberger - Big Ben let his fantasy owners down with a 174 yard, zero TD effort. Sound Off Like You’ve Got a Pierre - Pierre Thomas had just 42 total yards against the Rams. Really? Phony Maroney - My RB has a first name,  F-U-M-B-L-E. He’s the real reason the Pats lost. Very Much Vincible – Vincent Jackson had a whooping ten yards last week. This Week’s Topic: Thinking back to the players that you targeted in drafts at the beginning of the season, which 1 or 2 players have been the biggest disappointments?   What kind of additional information do you think you could use to avoid selecting this type of underachieving player in 2010 ? My Response: A couple of players that I targeted in fantasy drafts this year were Calvin Johnson and Carolina’s Steve Smith. Both Wide Receivers were coming…

Kansas City Royals ace and 2009’s top fantasy baseball pitcher Zack Greinke won the AL Cy Young award Tuesday in convincing fashion over Seattle’s Felix Hernandez and Detroit’s Justin Verlander. We identified Andruw Jones as a fantasy baseball sleeper two months before the 2009 season. Coming off the season that Jones had in 2008, it’s hard to imagine him as anything but a sleeper.  At age 32, it was questionable that he would even make a major league roster after his disastrous 2007 season with the [...]

It is that time of year once again.  If you are a rumor junky, the only time period that tops this is the trade deadline action.  I know I watch over all the transactions during the off-season. It certainly fuels my excitement for the upcoming season.  What would baseball be without all the speculation? From a Fantasy Baseball perspective, I am closing watching a couple of situations.  In my original keeper league, I own Matt Holliday and Adrian Gonzalez.  Where they end up will determine who I keep.  I know that you might think that I should keep both players, but I already have…

  • AFL Wrap Week 5: Vitters is Swinging Well

    18 Nov 2009 | 3:08 pm
As the fifth week of the AFL concludes the teams have played close to 30 games each. Four more and the regular season will conclude. At this point some players are certainly fatiguing. John Sickles noted that Domonic Brown’s swing appeared long, for example. This is anecdotal, but in comparing players last year I noticed many that struggled were playing for their third or fourth team. This is also shaping up to be a lower scoring year on the whole than 2008. I will give more details about that in next week’s end of season wrap. Hitting Highlights Josh Vitters (CHC – 3B) has a quiet ten…

    16 Nov 2009 | 1:54 pm
It was a slightly abbreviated schedule of regular season games in the AFL this past week as the best and brightest took center stage in the Rising Stars Showcase Saturday night. That game turned out to be the last action for Houston’s Jason Castro this fall, he is being shut down to avoid fatigue. This could indicate plans for major league action in 2010. Carlos Triunfel (SEA) debuted on October 29, his first game action since breaking his leg in April. Onto the notes … Hitting Highlights Starlin Castro (CHC – SS) played in four games and had two hits in each. He is the league’s…

Thanks to the MLB Network anyone with a computer and a high-speed internet connection could tune in and enjoy the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Showcase Saturday night. I have to give credit to the web tech team behind the site, the picture was sharp and I did not experience so much as a hiccup for the entire game even though I had multiple other windows open on my browser. The rosters are a combination of the highly regarded players and those that are producing well in the fall league, so most of the big names were in attendance. Starting with some brief pregame coverage: 8:21 An…

Grady Sizemore had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow back in September. It was deemed a success and here we are a little under ten weeks later and the team says he’s near 100%.  I’m not a doctor, but my first instincts are to say the team is lying.  That’s the way I like to lean.  A real skeptic.  What do you expect from someone with a mustache?  Have you ever met an optimistic mustachioed man?  Of course not, they’d shave if they were an optimist.  Crotchety, curmudgeony and other words found in a thesaurus.  Now even if the team is lying, it’s…

Last year, Brandon Allen treaded his six-two, two-hundred and thirty-five pound man-gams through Double- and Triple-A before hitting the majors in August.  And by hitting the majors, I don’t mean hitting in the majors.  As Lil Jon once said in grade school, I come correct with my prepositions, okaaaay!!!!!  In the minors in 2009, Allen slashed .298/.373/.503 with 20 homers, cutting his strikeout rate for the 2nd year in a row.  However, that didn’t carry over to the majors, whiffing 40 times in 104 at-bats.  Though, that was a small sample size… that’s what she…

Twitter Mailbag: AnswersLast week I asked for mailbag questions submitted via Twitter and you guys sent me a whole bunch of them, so here are some answers ...Where do you expect J.J. Hardy to bat in the lineup? This is tough to say before knowing who'll be playing second base, because history suggests that Ron Gardenhire will want to use a middle infielder in the second spot. J.J. Hardy wouldn't be a very good fit there because he has a poor .323 on-base percentage and grounds into a lot of double plays, which isn't the skill set that you want hitting directly in front of Joe Mauer. Ideally…

At various points over the past two years the Twins have been linked to Washburn in trade rumors, and depending on who you believe they were on the verge of acquiring him from the Mariners two seasons ago. However, based on his likely price tag signing Washburn would be a mistake for the Twins. An extreme fly-ball pitcher who took advantage of the Mariners' power-deflating ballpark and…

I've been on Twitter for a few months now and it recently occurred to me that putting together an AG.com mailbag entry consisting entirely of questions submitted via Twitter could be interesting. Realistic Free Agent Options: Third BaseProjecting which free agents the Twins will go after is difficult because their pursuit of low-cost options depends upon how the market shakes out and who drops into their price range. In the past five years they've also wasted money on a lengthy list of washed-up veterans like Tony Batista, Livan Hernandez, Ramon Ortiz, Craig Monroe, Juan Castro, Sidney Ponson, and Luis Ayala (among others) with only an occasional worthwhile signing like Joe Crede or Dennys Reyes sprinkled in.For the most part the Twins have targeted only bargain-basement options while…
