After all, he is hitting .323, which puts him ahead of all those elite catchers in that category. Lucroy hasn’t been a one-trick pony with merely a high batting average. It’s true that his eight runs scored and two home runs are far from elite numbers, but his RBI production (16) has been solid. So has his .845 OPS). Lucroy doesn’t appear…

Not all draft classes are created equal and unfortunately for the Twins they've stumbled into a bad year to have their first top-10 pick since 2001 and five other top-100 selections. There's no year in which having the No. 2 overall pick won't allow a team to potentially land a future star-caliber player, but the consensus on this year's pool is that it lacks the elite-level talent typically available that high in the draft and isn't even particularly strong in overall depth. Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton is widely considered the highest-upside prospect in the class, but several…

Justin Morneau exited last Monday's game with soreness in his surgically repaired left wrist, immediately flying from California to Minnesota to be examined by team doctors and admitting that the injury had been bothering him for several days. At the time I wondered why the Twins wouldn't just put him on the disabled list for two weeks if the situation was serious enough for a cross-country flight and an MRI exam for a chronically injured player. Instead, as they've done far too many times with far too many injured players during the past few seasons, they kept Morneau on the active roster…

  • Top Third-Year Receivers Poised For A Breakout Season

    Ray Tannock
    15 May 2012 | 3:22 pm
One of the many rules of thumb in fantasy football is to make sure you are fully aware of the many receivers entering their third year of play. The reason for this is because the third year of play often becomes the player’s potential “breakout” season. One shining example of this theory is Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin, who broke out last season—with a rookie quarterback, mind you—posting career numbers in catches (87), yards (967) while tying his record in TDs (6) from his rookie campaign back in 2009. This theory does, however, come with its fair share of risk involved.

When looking for players to fill your fantasy baseball roster form free agency or the waiver wire in your league, one of the first things many owners look for is performance, and rightly so. If a player is receiving every day playing time, he is more likely to help your fantasy team, after all, right? Maybe not. Think about it... is it better to have a player who plays every day but only hits a weak .250 with no power or speed? The good news is that there are many options among players who are part-timers who may just help your team. Best of all, your fellow owners probably have overlooked…

  • Disaster Relief: Fantasy Baseball Closers on the Waiver Wire

    Chris McBrien
    5 May 2012 | 8:48 pm
In the wake of the Mariano Rivera injury, we are reminded just how volatile the closer position is in fantasy baseball. No other position is the sole contributor of an entire fantasy category (saves) and no other position sees as much turnover. With the recent demotion of Carlos Marmol, along with a rash of injuries to closers around major league baseball, it’s time to look to the waiver wire for relief on your fantasy roster: Rafael Soriano (NYY) – With Mo’s injury, a huge hole is left in the Yankees bullpen. In fantasy terms, this is a potentially very lucrative position to be filled.

He has more than held his own at AA at just 19-years-old and he is now hitting .291 with four home runs, 19 RBI and six stolen bases in 148 at bats. He is going to present the Rangers with an interesting dilemma in another year when he is ready for the major leagues with Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler entrenched in the middle of the infield. With Jeff Niemann hitting the disabled list for the Tampa Bay Rays, the team may look to Triple-A for a new pitcher in…

The Chicago White Sox reversed course last week on their announcement they would be moving Chris Sale from the rotation to the closer role. Sale made just one appearance in out of the bullpen and then was moved back into the rotation with a start on Saturday against Kansas City. Manager Robin Ventura has three players to pick from to close with Addison Reed looking like favorite until he allowed six runs in 1/3 of an inning on Sunday. Matt Thornton has been less than impressive of late with eight runs allowed in his last 2 2/3 innings of work. Hector Santiago by default might be back in the…

Last week I wrote about David Robertson taking over as closer for the New York Yankees and being the guy to own based on his stuff. Unfortunately, that stuff does not always necessarily translate once the pressure of the ninth inning is added to the mix. He picked up a save Tuesday night despite allowing three base runners in an inning of work and tonight he blew a save against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing four runs in 2/3 of an inning. Rafael Soriano figures to get the next save opportunity based on Robertson’s outings the last two games, which gives Soriano some more value in deeper…

Photo Credit: Marianne O'Leary Although baseball is well underway and the season is chugging along as usual, there are a number of absolute studs that have been seriously underperforming. Obviously everybody and their mother knows of Albert Pujols’ struggles, but Jose Bautista and Robinson Cano are also putting up duds on the regular nowadays. Moving down the totem pole a bit, guys like Jose Reyes, Ben Zobrist, Brandon Philips, and Nelson Cruz are also punishing owners for taking them early in the draft. Find out what the future holds for these dudes.More after the jump:

  • The 2012 Minor League Report – Week 7

    Todd Lammi
    15 May 2012 | 10:59 pm
Shortstop Jurickson Profar (TEX) extended his hitting streak to 25 games at Double-A and has now reached based in 34 straight games. With Jeff Niemann hitting the disabled list for the Tampa Bay Rays, the team may look to Triple-A for a new pitcher in…
  • 2012 Fantasy Baseball Closer Report – Week 7

    Todd Lammi
    14 May 2012 | 8:05 pm
The Chicago White Sox reversed course last week on their announcement they would be moving Chris Sale from the rotation to the closer role. Sale made just one appearance in out of the bullpen and then was moved back into the rotation with a start on Saturday against Kansas City. Manager Robin Ventura has three players to pick from to close with Addison Reed looking like favorite until he allowed six runs in 1/3 of an inning on Sunday. Matt Thornton has been less than impressive of late with eight runs allowed in his last 2 2/3 innings of work. Hector Santiago by default might be back in the…

American League: 7 games: all teams Hitters: Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings sat out his sixth consecutive game with an injured knee and there is still no timetable for his return although it does not sound he will need a trip to the disabled list. Unless some new breaks early Monday morning, it is best to reserve him for next week if you have other alternatives. The Baltimore Orioles…

  • 2012 Waiver Wire – Week 6

    Todd Lammi
    10 May 2012 | 6:25 am
Last week I wrote about David Robertson taking over as closer for the New York Yankees and being the guy to own based on his stuff. Unfortunately, that stuff does not always necessarily translate once the pressure of the ninth inning is added to the mix. He picked up a save Tuesday night despite allowing three base runners in an inning of work and tonight he blew a save against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing four runs in 2/3 of an inning. Rafael Soriano figures to get the next save opportunity based on Robertson’s outings the last two games, which gives Soriano some more value in deeper…

  • Future Rookies: Week 4

    Josh Shepardson
    8 May 2012 | 8:00 am
Fans of Double-A baseball have been treated to some scintillating play at the dish and on the bump. This week’s Future Rookies is reflective of that fact, as only two featured upper minors players have received the bulk of their time in Triple-A. One of those Triple-A players was summoned from the minors to replace [...]
